Did your Shopify purchase tracking stop on 26 August 2026?

On 26 August 2026 Shopify stopped running the old "Additional scripts" on the Thank you and Order status pages of every non-Plus store. Purchase tags that lived there stopped firing, usually without any error. Here is how to tell whether yours did, and what to do.

What changed

Shopify replaced the old Thank you and Order status pages with new ones built on checkout extensibility. Plus stores moved by 28 August 2025; every other store by 26 August 2026. On the new pages, code pasted into Settings → Checkout → Additional scripts does not run. Shopify's own help centre says additional scripts for tracking and analytics are not supported there.

If your GA4, Google Ads or Meta purchase tag was in that box, the store kept selling normally, but those platforms stopped hearing about the sales.

Signs it happened to you

A drop on its own does not prove this cause: seasonality, consent banners and other changes can also move the numbers. Compare orders, not just totals.

Check it in five minutes

  1. In Shopify Admin, open Settings → Checkout and look for an Additional scripts box with tracking code in it. Code there no longer runs on the Thank you page.
  2. Open Settings → Customer events. Purchases should now come from an app pixel (such as Google & YouTube) or a custom pixel. If nothing there sends a purchase, nothing does.
  3. Place a test order and watch GA4's Realtime report for a purchase event with your order number as transaction_id.

Fix it

Move purchase tracking to one source: Shopify's Google & YouTube app, a custom pixel in Customer events, or a tracking app. Remove the old snippet so you do not end up with two sources and double-counted sales. The step-by-step fix guide covers the details, including payment methods such as PayPal that send shoppers away from your store.

Sales that were never recorded cannot be added to GA4 afterwards. A fix only helps from the day it goes live, so it is worth checking now.

How CommerceTrace shows it

The free storefront check needs no account and shows whether product view, add to cart and checkout events are sent. It does not place an order, so it cannot see the Thank you page itself.

The full order audit, installed from the Shopify App Store, compares each Shopify order with the purchases GA4 recorded, shows day by day what share of orders reached GA4, and lists the orders that are missing. Mark the day you fixed your tracking and the next audit compares the days before and after it.
