Why is GA4 revenue lower than Shopify?

Start by comparing like with like. Most of the gap between GA4 revenue and Shopify sales comes from the two counting different things; the rest is purchases GA4 never received. The steps below tell you which one you have, and what to do about each.

The fix, in order

  1. Use the same days in the same time zone. GA4 reports in the property's time zone, Shopify in the store's. Check both under GA4 Admin → Property details and Shopify Settings → General, and make them match.
  2. Compare the same kind of revenue. GA4's purchase revenue is the value your purchase event sends, which may or may not include shipping and tax, depending on your setup. Shopify's reports split gross sales, discounts, returns, shipping and taxes. Pick the Shopify figure that matches what your event sends.
  3. Compare the number of orders before the money. Count Shopify orders and GA4 purchases (transactions) for the same days. If the counts match but revenue does not, the difference is in the value sent, not in missing purchases.
  4. Check the currency. GA4 converts revenue into the property's currency. If your store sells in more than one currency, totals will not line up exactly.
  5. If GA4 has fewer purchases, find which orders are missing. Look up your order numbers as transaction_id in GA4. The orders without a purchase are the ones to investigate.

Why GA4 can have fewer purchases

Some gap is normal for every store. What matters is whether it is steady, and which orders fall into it.

Check your storefront for free

The free storefront check needs no account. It visits your store like a shopper and shows whether product view, add to cart and checkout events reach Google Analytics. It does not place an order.

The full audit, installed from the Shopify App Store, compares each Shopify order with the purchases GA4 recorded and lists the ones that are missing, with the evidence for each.
