Did Shopify pause your Meta pixel?
On 13 January 2026 Shopify changed how app pixels share data. Under the new default, "Optimized", Shopify can pause a marketing pixel it judges is not helping, including the Meta pixel installed by the Facebook & Instagram app. Several agencies report Meta purchase events falling sharply from that date. Here is how to check, and how to switch it back.
What changed
App pixels in Settings → Customer events used to send data all the time. Since 13 January 2026 the default for marketing app pixels is Optimized: Shopify watches each pixel and may pause some or all of its data sharing when it sees no attribution signal for a while. Custom pixels and server-side setups, such as Meta's Conversions API sent from a server, are not paused this way.
Signs it happened to you
- Meta Events Manager shows fewer Purchase events from the browser while Shopify orders hold steady.
- Meta campaigns report fewer purchases or a lower return on ad spend without a change on your side.
- The drop started around 13 January 2026, or some days after a quiet period for your ads.
A drop on its own does not prove this cause: consent banners, iOS limits and other changes move Meta's numbers too.
Check it in two minutes
- In Shopify Admin, open Settings → Customer events and the App pixels tab.
- Find the Facebook & Instagram pixel and look at its Data column.
- If it says Optimized, Shopify may pause it. Choose Always on to keep it sending.
- Open the pixel's activity to see whether Shopify paused it, and when.
The same applies to other marketing app pixels, such as TikTok or Pinterest.
How CommerceTrace helps
Apps cannot read this setting, so CommerceTrace does not claim to see it. What the full order audit shows is Sales from your ads: how many of your orders came from a Meta ad click, and how many of those Google Analytics never recorded. The free storefront check shows whether the Meta pixel sends product view, add to cart and checkout events from your storefront.
